Google considers more than 200 ranking factors within its algorithm to determine where to rank your website among your competitors. One of these factors is your domain authority. So, just how important is your website’s ranking, and how is it calculated? Domain Authority (DA) was originally a term coined by the popular SEO industry blog Moz, which later released its own set of tools to help marketers learn more about SEO, and in-turn, perform their jobs to a higher standard. Among those tools is Link Explorer which enables marketers, website owners, and SEO experts to check their DA and thus predict the domain’s ranking potential within search engines based on an algorithmic combination of all known link metrics. Moz replaced their Open Site Explorer with a new tool called Link Explorer which can still be used as a domain authority checker, like our tool above.
The DA of your website is a combination of link metrics and other ranking signals associated with your domain. So what does that mean for you and why should you check your DA regularly? Using a single metric such as Moz’s DA sets a benchmark that allows users to gauge just how far ahead their competitors’ websites are of their own. Knowing that will give you some indication of how long it may take and how much effort would be needed to begin competing for traffic with your competitors within the search engines. A higher DA will usually result in higher search rankings and thus a greater visibility within the search engines.
There are a number of factors that determine your website’s DA; however, the biggest factor involves backlinks, more specifically, referring domains. When looking at referring domains, DA takes into consideration the number of referring domains, the quality of those domains (their DA), the relevancy of those domains, and the positioning (i.e. whether they are in context, sidebar, or image links) and manner which those links appear on the referring domains (i.e. whether the links were paid for or were naturally referenced). Other factors that determine your page’s Domain Authority include MozTrust and MozRank, which are also metrics developed by Moz.
The higher your website’s Domain Authority, the more likely your website is to have a high rank within the search engine results pages (SEPRs). Although every website’s goal should be to get their highest score possible, you’ll typically only find the most popular sites on the internet with a rating of 90 or higher. These are sites like Facebook, Wikipedia, and Google. Websites with a DA of 20 or lower, on the other hand, are much more common. Domains with these scores are usually either brand new or low quality websites and businesses. As your website improves and begins to earn trust, its DA will increase. However, it’s worth noting that it’s significantly more difficult to grow from 70 to 80 DA than from 10 to 30.
